Peter Obi Faults Tinubu Administration on Fuel Subsidy Savings Management | NBA Conference

Peter Obi

The debate around Nigeria's fuel subsidy policy has shifted from whether it should be removed to how the proceeds are managed.

Speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA] Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stated that while subsidy removal was economically necessary, the Federal Government has failed to strategically reinvest the savings to cushion impact and drive productivity.

The Core Argument: Policy vs. Execution

Obi distinguished between the policy decision and its implementation:

“I subscribe and I maintain that we need to remove subsidy. Mismanagement of the proceeds should not be the reason for not removing it,” Obi said.

He argued that the critical failure was not the removal itself, but the absence of a transparent, productive reinvestment plan.

“What we should have done is that when we removed it, we should have given the people alternative usage for the subsidy.”

Obi further alleged that the resources recovered from the policy are being mismanaged and diverted, contrary to his 2023 proposal for an organized, accountable framework that would channel savings into critical economic sectors.

Strategic Implications for Executives

For decision-makers, the key issue is capital allocation and economic stability:

1. Cost of Doing Business:

Without targeted reinvestment in transport, power, and social infrastructure, the inflationary pressure from higher fuel prices continues to affect operations and consumer purchasing power.

2. Investor Confidence

Transparent accounting of subsidy savings is critical for fiscal credibility and long-term investor sentiment.

3. Productivity Gap

The opportunity cost lies in failing to redirect trillions of naira in savings into productive sectors that could reduce logistics and energy costs.

Bottom Line

The consensus among economists is that subsidy removal is a necessary reform. The executive concern now is ROI - how the savings are being tracked, reported, and invested to create measurable economic relief.

We want your feedback:

As a business leader, how has the post-subsidy environment impacted your sector? What is the single most productive area where you believe subsidy savings should be invested to ease the burden on businesses and Nigerians?
