Adelabu Quits Oyo 2027 Governorship Race, Seeks APC Reconciliation
Former Power Minister Rejects Alleged Injustice in Primary, Says Decision Is Not Surrender
In a major twist ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has formally withdrawn from the governorship race of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.
Adelabu announced his decision in a personally signed statement released on Thursday, days after the party’s keenly contested governorship primary.
Adelabu Withdraws, Rules Out Court Action
The former minister disclosed that he will not challenge the outcome of the primary through the party’s internal appeal mechanism nor will he institute any legal action at this time.
According to him, his decision to step aside should not be interpreted as surrender in the face of alleged injustice, but as a sacrifice for party unity and stability in Oyo State.
He reaffirmed his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress, stressing that he has no plans to defect or leave the party despite the setback.
Appeal for Calm Among Supporters
Adelabu appealed to his supporters, loyalists, and party faithful across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State to remain peaceful, restrained and civil in their reactions to the outcome of the nomination process.
He noted that political ambition is a call to serve, and that he remains convinced that power ultimately rests with God.
Background: 13 Aspirants, One Consensus Candidate
Recall that Adelabu resigned as Minister of Power on April 22, 2026, to focus on his ambition to govern Oyo State.
He was among 13 aspirants who contested for the APC governorship ticket. At the end of the exercise, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, representing Oyo South Senatorial District, emerged as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
Adelabu Urges APC Leaders to Reconcile Aggrieved Members
While bowing out of the 2027 race, Adelabu called on the leadership of the APC at the state and national levels to urgently engage all aggrieved aspirants and members to heal wounds and build a united front ahead of the general elections.
He pledged to remain committed to the growth of the APC and the development of Oyo State.
The withdrawal of Adelabu, a major political force in Oyo State, has now cleared the path for Senator Alli, but analysts say how the party manages reconciliation will determine its chances in 2027.
