FG Moves to Expand 24-Hour Power Supply to Hospitals Nationwide

 

The Federal Government has approved fresh measures to accelerate reliable electricity supply to health facilities across Nigeria in a major push to improve healthcare delivery and end persistent blackouts in hospitals.

The approval was granted at the third meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee on the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI). The meeting was jointly chaired by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako and the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe.

The NPHI is a joint programme of the Federal Ministries of Health and Power designed to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to health facilities nationwide.  

Key Decisions Reached

According to a communique from the meeting, the committee approved:

1. Creation of a Dedicated Programme Unit:

 A new coordination unit will be established within the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to drive implementation. The proposal will be presented to the National Council on Health.

2. Engagement of Energy Providers: 

The committee endorsed continued engagement with eight energy solution providers to fast-track deployment.

3. Energy Hubs in Tertiary Hospitals:

 Selected federal tertiary hospitals will be developed as energy hubs to speed up reliable power deployment.

100 Hospitals Already Electrified, 30% Target by 2027

Speaking after the meeting, Minister Salako said government is strengthening governance and partnerships to expand healthcare electrification.

He disclosed that interventions by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have already provided reliable electricity to about 100 hospitals, while development partners are supporting similar efforts at the primary healthcare level.

Salako reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu's target of ensuring at least 30% of health facilities nationwide have access to reliable 24-hour electricity by the end of 2027. The initiative targets over 35,000 health facilities, starting with tertiary hospitals.  

Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom, said sustained collaboration among government agencies and development partners will be critical to making reliable power a standard feature of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Power for Health Initiative, established in 2025, adopts an Energy-as-a-Service model where private companies finance, install and maintain power systems while hospitals focus on medical service delivery.
