At LASU's combined 29th and 30th Convocation for 2024/2025 and 2025/2026, industrialist Aliko Dangote made two major commitments via the Aliko Dangote Foundation: a ₦600m pledge for a female hostel and automatic employment consideration for First-Class graduates in Engineering and Sciences after NYSC. The pledge was announced on LASU's official Facebook page on Friday. Dangote, represented by his daughter Hajia Fatima Aliko Dangote, was conferred with Honorary Doctor of Business Honoris Causa in Entrepreneurship, Industrial and Human Capital Development.
The Infrastructure Commitment
The ₦600m is earmarked for construction of accommodation for female students - a direct response to LASU's accommodation deficit. This comes as the university notes expansion of its accommodation capacity and execution of 50+ infrastructure projects funded by Lagos State Government, FG, TETFund, private sector, and IGR, including the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex, lecture theatres and halls.
3. The Talent Acquisition Play
All First-Class graduates in Engineering and Sciences from the two sessions get preferential consideration for roles at Dangote Group post-NYSC.
This is a strategic pipeline play: Dangote Group employs 52,000+ people across Nigeria and 11 other African countries, and runs the Dangote Academy for practical industrial training.
Convocation by Numbers - The Context
• Total Graduates: 20,604 across both sessions
• First-Class: 494 total [262 in 2024/2025; 232 in 2025/2026]
• Overall Best 2024/2025: Ayilara Lawal Olawale, Project Management, CGPA 4.96
• Overall Best 2025/2026: Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide, Aerospace Engineering, CGPA 4.97
• Vice-Chancellor: Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello
• Chancellor: Oba Dr. Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, Telade IV
Wider Education Investment Strategy
The Foundation announced a 10-year plan to invest $70m annually in secondary and tertiary education, teacher training, STEM, and technical & vocational education, plus its existing scholarship programme.
6. Peer Recognition & Government Support
Dangote was one of three honorary doctorate recipients alongside Akin Kekere-Ekun, OFR, and Harriet-Ann Omobola Adesola. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in his final address as Visitor to LASU, also donated ₦20m each to the two overall best graduating students.
"Dangote's dual commitment - ₦600m for female accommodation and jobs for First-Class STEM graduates - is a model for how industry can close the gap between academic excellence and industrial readiness. It directly supports inclusion and human capital development."
