"It is in furtherance of the said decisions that we write to inform you that 27 January, 2022, was picked as a day that Congress-led protest rallies will hold in the 36 States of the Federation, against the plans of the Federal Government to increase the pump price of petrol.

“You are hereby requested to convene a State Executive Council (SEC) meeting where you can map out strategies to ensure the success of the action in your state.

“You are also encouraged to reach out to our civil society allies in your state in your mobilization efforts.

“A Central Working Committee (CWC) member will be on hand on the day of the rally with the Protest Letter to be submitted to the governor of your state.

“Please feel free to reach out to the General Secretary for any clarifications and observations in the implementation of this NEC decision.”

Earlier, the People's Alternative Political Movement (TPAP-M), a coalition of individuals and organisations committed to the emergence and building of a Mass Workers Party, and the Socialist Transformation of Nigeria, rejected the recent hike in the price of gas and the impending hikes in the price of fuel and electricity tariff, among other things.

The coalition stated this in a communique of a public meeting organised by TRAP-M and its allies on the impending hikes in fuel and electricity prices.

It said it would organise another Occupy Nigeria Protests on the 10th anniversary of the first one in January 2022.

Imo govt: we have no hand in Police operation

The Imo State Government and the Senator representing Imo West in the National Assembly, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday traded words over the arrest of the 2019 governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) Chief Uche Nwosu.

Nwosu, who is also Okorocha’s son-in-law, was arrested at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Eziama-Obaire in Nkwerre Local Government Area of the state by policemen in connection with “a case that is under investigation.”

The manner of his arrest had triggered rumours that he was kidnapped until the Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Michael Abattam, clarified that he was arrested, following an order from above.

He also accused the operatives of humiliating his wife by pushing her down and his daughter by tearing her clothes.

The former governor, who described the incident as “the worst humiliation in my life,” said President Muhammadu Buhari “should be informed about what is happening in Imo State

“Uzodimma wants to frame me up by all means. Uzodinma has to answer for most of the activities going on. Uzodinma must mention the names of those who are responsible for insecurity in Imo State or he should be held responsible for all the killings in the state.

“Uzodimma has framed up something against Uche Nwosu. Buhari should be informed about what is happening in Imo state. Hundreds of citizens are been killed in this state.

“How come it is only Abuja and Imo State government House that know about the arrest. I want to know the reason for the attack on a church and, why Uche Nwosu should be treated like a criminal.

Imo State Government should provide answers immediately. You can’t be governor of the people by intimidation”

Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Declan Emelumba said Okorocha’s reaction has proved him guilty as ”all he wants to do is to whip up sentiments among Imo citizens.”

He told reporters at the Government House, that the former governor should have waited for the law to take its course before reacting.

Emelumba said: “If Uche Nwosu is arrested, what he (Okorocha) should do is to wait and see why he was arrested. But he is talking incoherently and that will not save him. What he should do is wait for the law to take its course.

“All of you went to Orsu and saw the carnage there. I am not saying he is linked to the incident. You also witnessed his statement during his mother-in-law’s burial where he invited youths to protest. All these are evidence of his inciting actions in the state.”

The commissioner, who denied government’s involvement in the arrest, said: “The government has no hand in the arrest of Uche Nwosu, but any attempt by Okorocha to use it to cause panic is evidence of guilt and that cannot save him.

“Okorocha contradicted himself when he said that the commissioner of police told him that the order came from the IGP and at the same time he said that the arrest was ordered by the governor. This shows that he is speaking incoherently and that cannot save him.”

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the police for arresting Nwosu inside in a church.

It urged the Police Service Commission (PSC) to investigate the arrest, which it described as an unprofessional conduct.

HURIWA said: ”The reckless and ruthlessly lawless mannerisms displayed by the Imo State Police Command in the vicinity of the church will make it impossible for citizens to separate terrorists from law enforcers because under democracy, the operatives of the law enforcement agencies are bound by rules of civility and law-based approach to law enforcement.

“The method adopted by the police violates the Nigerian Police Act of 2020 in which several provisions mandate the police to treat citizens with dignity and to respect their constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights as enshrined in Chapter 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999 as amended.

“We condemn this criminal tendency by the Imo State Police Command and this has given credence to the report documented by Amnesty International in which the global human rights body accused the command of the use of extrajudicial executions of innocent citizens as their law enforcement tactics. This sort of unprovoked violence and primitive show of force by the Imo State Police Command is unconstitutional, illegal, despicable, treacherous, and reprehensible.

“This was why everyone in Nigeria believed that the shooters were kidnappers long before the police issued a tepid press statement claiming to have arrested Uche Nwosu.”

In one certain Parish, the late Bishop Michael Eneja of Nsukka Catholic Diocese was on a Pastoral visit. That faithful late afternoon, the weather was very hot, such that staying inside the Church or Hall was not an option at all. The Saintly Bishop decided to have his teaching outside, under the avocado pea tree at the center of Church premises.

This impromptu change of arrangement caused a stir, occasioning a lot of running around for the Parish PRIEST and other key officers of the Parish council.

The major drama happened when the Parish PRIEST returned with a conference table and discovered that the Bishop had already picked up a broom at the front of the Church and started sweeping.

On sighting the Bishop bending down with a broom in his hand sweeping, the Parish PRIEST shouted "My Lord, please don't do that to me! Give me the broom, let me do the sweeping myself!"

Despite the Priest's insistence, the Bishop refused to allow him. On the contrary, he said to the priest, "Go and get your own broom."

In obedience, the Parish PRIEST went and picked up his own broom and started sweeping. It did not take long before the catechist arrived at the scene and saw both His Lordship and the Parish PRIEST sweeping, and he nearly fainted!

2018 Nobel laureate Tasuku Honjo has refuted any link to social media posts that claim the SARS-CoV-2 virus was ‘man-made’ or ‘invented’ in a lab.

AsianScientist (Apr. 28, 2020) – Professor Tasuku Honjo, co-awardee of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, has refuted any link to social media posts that claim the SARS-CoV-2 virus was ‘man-made’ or ‘invented’ in a laboratory.

“In the wake of the pain, economic loss, and unprecedented global suffering caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I am greatly saddened that my name and that of Kyoto University have been used to spread false accusations and misinformation,” Honjo said in a statement released by Kyoto University today.

While comparative analysis of genomic data has shown evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus, the notion that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was invented has continued to receive mileage on social media platforms.

“At this stage, when all of our energies are needed to treat the ill, prevent the further spread of sorrow, and plan for a new beginning, the broadcasting of unsubstantiated claims regarding the origins of the disease is dangerously distracting,” Honjo said.

Honjo is currently the deputy director-general and a distinguished professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Kyoto University, Japan. In 1992, Honjo discovered programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), a key player in tumor immunology. He showed that PD-1, a protein expressed on the surface of a subset of immune cells known as T-cells, functions as a brake on T-cell function, and that blocking PD-1 would help to restore T-cell targeting of cancer cells.

The Japanese immunologist’s findings paved the way for the use of PD-1 inhibitors as cancer treatment in human patients. Clinical development ensued, and in 2012 a key study demonstrated clear efficacy in the treatment of patients with different types of cancer, with patients experiencing long-term remission.
