Newcastle United vs Manchester United LIVE: 1-1

This is the beginning of our Newcastle United vs Manchester United LIVE live blog, with all the updates from this Monday evening clash following on from here and with the most recent entries nearest the top.

Full time - Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

A spirited Newcastle side went ahead through Allan Saint-Maximin early on and had the better chances throughout the game, with he Frenchman and Joelinton causing plenty of issues. Man Utd never looked like scoring and a rather fortuitous strike from Edinson Cavani was enough to earn a point, though David De Gea was the away side's main man as he made numerous key saves.

Minute 88 - Newcastle chances

It that their last opportunity? Jacob Murphy hits the post for Newcastle then, on the follow up, Almiron is denied by the outstretched hand of De Gea.

Minute 76 - Worrying moments

Man Utd never deserved their equaliser, but they have come close to getting ahead as an Alex Telles cross finds Cavani at the back post but Martin Dubravka manages to get a touch and knock the ball out.

Minute 70 - Goal Man Utd!

Cavani has come on and equalised for Man Utd. A low Diogo Dalot cross falls to the Uruguayan and his initial effort cannons back off the defence and back into his path, and he makes no mistake at the second attempt. All square.

Minute 60 - Better from Man Utd

One positive for the away side is that at least they are having some shots on goal. Rashford forces a good save from Dubravka with a dipping long range shot. Then subs Cavani and Sancho combine with the former getting a tame effort on goal.

Minute 47 - De Gea saves Man Utd!

A massive moment in the game as De Gea performs a brilliant save to deny ASM, who was unmarked six yards from goal, and looked destined to double Newcastle's lead.

Second half begins

We are back under way in Newcastle, with Man Utd making two changes at the break. Jadon Sancho and Edinson Cavani replace Fred and Mason Greenwood

Half time - Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

Newcastle, who have won just one game all season in the Premier League, go in at half time a goal up against Manchester Untied. Deservedly so with Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton the best on the pitch. The visitors have been poor, offering nothing in attack, while at the back mistakes are commonplace. Rangnick will need to have a strong word at the break if his men are to get anything from this game.

Minute 38 - Newcastle goal ruled out

Saint-Maximin causing more problems for the Man Utd defence and his low pass to Callum Wilson allows his teammate to knock it past De Gea, but he was offside. Another let off for the visitors.

Minute 30 - Nothing from Man Utd

Half an hour in and Manchester United have offered very little in the final third - three shots all blocked. Lacklustre passing, and a distinct lack of desire have been the hallmarks of the Red Devils' opening period.

Minute 23 - Another Newcastle chance

Another poor pass from Fred gifts the ball to Newcastle, who break with Shelvey. The midfielder has a go from distance only for his effort to be punched away by De Gea.

Minute 12 - Newcastle on top

Saint-Maximin starts a break after Fred gave the ball away needlessly, and the ball falls to Joelinton on the edge of the box who fires just wide of goal. Man Utd are all over the shop at this point.

Minute 7 - Goal Newcastle!

Saint-Maximin gives Newcastle the lead! Poor defending from Man Utd again as Varane is robbed of the ball by S. Longstaff who finds Saint-Maximin and he delightfully curls the ball into the net from the edge of the area.

Minute 5 - Cagey start from Man Utd

An early heart-in-mouth moment from Harry Maguire after he mis-controls a long ball, but Ryan Fraser is unable to take advantage of the centre-back's mistake.

Kick off!

We are underway at St James' Park.

Record for Rangnick?

Under new boss Ralf Rangnick, Manchester United have kept cleansheets in both of the German's opening Premier League games - winning 1-0 twice. Should Newcastle fail to score, then he will be the first Man Utd boss to keep a cleansheet in his opening three league fixtures.

It starts with the strikers

Manchester United coach Ralf Rangnick to Sky Sports: "We resumed for training last Tuesday and on Thursday had almost the whole team apart from Paul Pogba in training. Unfortunately, Victor Lindelof tested positive with Covid yesterday so he cannot play. But Raphael Varane is available again and is in the starting line-up. In the last three or four days we had some good training sessions.

"We had two clean sheets in the last two games and so no need for me to change anything I do not have to. It is about taking steps and development. With our team, we are always able to score goals so it is about having a clean sheet and playing defensively with all the players. It starts up front with the strikers."

Need for a performance

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "A massive occasion, a massive game. Games here between these teams are very historic. We are looking to create those memories for us and leave a really good feeling for the supporters.

"We are looking for every game to be transformative. We are capable. We've seen in the last two games we have competed against two really difficult opponents. Performances have been really good. Today we need to put it all together and produce the complete performance."

Newcastle vs Manchester United: Official line-ups

There are six changes for Newcastle with three coming in defence, as Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar replace Jacob Murphy, Matt Ritchie and Ciaran Clark.
