Some Fats Might Harm Your Memory

Nov. 18, 2014 -- Men under 45 years old who eat lots of trans fats may be hurting their memory, according to a new study released Tuesday.

Researchers at UC San Francisco followed 1,000 healthy men who ate various amounts of trans fats, and they found that the men in that age range who ate the most did the worst on a word recall test.
“People were presented with a series of cards with words on them, and they had to decide if they were repeats, or newly-presented words,” says Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD, the lead researcher. “Each additional gram of trans fat  consumed per day was associated with .76 fewer words recalled.”
That might not sound like a lot, but the highest trans-fat eaters in the study took in about 15 grams per day, and that’s a sizeable drop in memory.

Health Benefits of Watermelons

The health benefits of watermelon include the prevention of kidney disorders, high blood pressure, the prevention of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, heat stroke, macular degeneration and impotence.

The question is, why is there so much craze for the watermelon? At first glance, it may seem like nothing more than a big ball of water.  We all know that there is nothing more refreshing than a big, chilled wedge of watermelon on a hot, summer day and it does sport a stylish scientific name of Citrullus Lanatus, but what’s the real reason so many people flock to grocery stores every summer to buy a big, awkward fruit like this one? Well, it is hard to narrow it down to a single reason; there are actually a lot of them.

Why The Pushup Is The World's Greatest Exercise

If I could only do one exercise for the rest of my life, it would be the push-up.

Maybe you hate them or you think you can't complete a single rep or you think being a runner (or a cyclist or a walker) means you only need to focus on your lower body. But it's time to stop considering the pushup an arm workout and start accepting it for the body-altering, core-strengthening move it truly is. You don't have to drop and give me 50; simply incorporating more pushups into your regular routine can help you reach all sorts of fitness goals, by helping you improve everything from your posture on your bike to your balance to your arm swing.

Pastor E.A. Adeboye: ”How A Married Woman Tried To Seduce Me”

Wonders shall never end! At the ongoing 62nd annual convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Adeboye narrated that a high profile woman who was an executive of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, tried everything just to seduce him. According to him, the woman came to him and announced to him that God had told her that he would be her husband, and immediately he rebuked her, saying “you know that I am happily married and have children.” That didn’t deter the woman who continued to pester him, and even came to the camp to threaten him, saying “if you stand on my way to marrying this man, I will kill you.”

Pastor Adeboye took the matter to then Inspector General of Police who immediately invited the woman and her husband to his office and after a meeting banned the randy woman from entering the Redemption Camp or ever making passes at the man of God. “But that measure didn’t stop her. I travelled to London without telling anybody, to work on the church’s devotional, Open Heaven. As soon as I settled down in the room, the telephone rang and the voice at the other end said: “welcome to London. I am coming in 15 minutes, The cleric continued, wondering why his audience responded with a laughter.Continuing, he said he told the voice: “You don’t know anything, you know that the Police in London are very efficient and if you dare come here, I will call the Police for you.”

17 Things You Didn’t Know About The Ebola Virus

It’s the worst ebola virus outbreak in history. West Africa is in a state of panic and paranoia. More than 1,201 people have been infected and 672 have died since the outbreak started more than four months ago. With up to a 90-percent fatality rate, the virus terrorizes residents of countries where breakouts occur, and terrifies the rest of us worried that it will spread. Preventing its spread is the primary goal of medical personnel. Here are 17 things you didn’t know about the Ebola Virus, from its first cases in Central Africa, to the current red-alert situation, to treatment and containment methods, to hopeful signs for future prevention. -

Biology Ebola is categorized as a member of the filoviridae family of viruses, one of three negative-stranded RNA viruses (Marburg, Ebola, and Reston) that often take on a “U” shape. Although it’s not yet known how it enters the cell, once inside, the RNA of the ebola virus is transcribed and replicated inside the cytoplasm, thereby infecting the cell. The Niemann-Pic C1 (NPC1) is a cholesterol transporter protein that is required for the ebola virus to permeate a cell, infect it, and replicate. The mutation of NPC1 is believed by many scientists to be key to finding a cure — perhaps through its mutation. As viruses are acellular, they do not replicate into other cells, but use the interior makeup of the host cell to multiply and assemble within the cell.

Bitter Kola Cannot Cure Ebola — Health Minister

The Minister for Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said there is no scientific evidence of Garcinia kola, popularly known as bitter kola curing or preventing Ebola virus disease.

The research work that people are laying claims, to according to the minister is inconclusive.

Experts Say Transmission Of Ebola Virus By Air Possible

THE Ebola Virus is essentially transmitted from human-to-human through direct contact with infected patients, or through contact with body fluids of a victim. However, scientists are not ruling out the possibility of transmission by air through aerosolised particles.

Previously, Canadian scientists have shown that the deadliest form of the Ebola virus (the Zaire Ebola) could be transmitted by air between species. Although no human over-ther-air transmission of the lethal viral disorder has been recorded, but the Patrick Sawyer incidence in Lagos, Nigeria, has reopened worries over the implications of the possibility of its transmission in an enclosed environment such as an aircraft cabin.

Why You Need To Go On A Detox Diet

A detox diet is very important for neutralizing as well as eliminating toxins from the body. If the toxins become so much in the body, they can harm the body tissue and also hinder normal cell activity. These toxins might also put stress on other internal organs and create physiological problems that will be manifested as mental and physical problems. The toxins usually come from the unhealthy junk foods and drinks that we take every day. The sedentary lifestyle that most of us live which is coupled with lack of exercise also contributes to the increase of toxins in your bodies.

Even though the liver, intestines, lungs, kidneys, blood, the skin as well as the lymphatic system actively work together to make sure that the toxins are converted into less toxic substances and also excreted from the body, it is important to detox once in a while so that these organs are not overwhelmed by the toxins. The detox diet is a short term diet that reduces the amount of chemicals ingested in the body, for instance when you consume organic foods. It usually emphasizes on foods that provide vitamins, antioxidants and other nutrients that the body needs to carry out the detoxification

So What's So Special About Arabica Coffee?

What's So Special About Arabica Coffee Beans?

Have you ever wondered why it is that Arabica coffee is mentioned as a selling point on some coffees and why it seems to attract a higher price as well? A quick online search will return hundreds of results for coffees boasting '100% pure Arabica beans' or 'blended using Arabica coffee'.

The answer is a lot more simple than you might think. Most coffee blends are made using either Arabica or Robusta, and most of the time, a mixture of the two in varying ratios. Robusta cherries contain, on average, just over twice the caffeine of Arabica cherries (which you might think is a good thing!) and more caffeine that almost any other major coffee type. Caffeine itself has a slightly bitter taste, and this shows up in the blending process when Robusta is used, resulting in a bitter and slightly burnt taste. Arabica, by contrast, contains far less caffeine and therefore results in a smoother and less bitter flavor.

As a person who has dealt with low vision for the last 25 years, I urge you to take your blurry vision seriously, as it can be an indication of a far greater issue.

Ramadan Kareem

MUSLIMS all over the world mark the end of Ramadan fasting with the Eid-el-Fitri celebration. The festivity comes on the first day of the 10th month of Islamic lunar calendar, and has become one of two festivals of Islamic significance, the other being Eid-el-Kabir. After a month-long ascetic life and spiritual supplications to the Almighty, Eid is expected to usher in illimitable bliss for devotees. Today is an occasion of jollity and thanksgiving. All good Muslims should take advantage of the day to vow never to go back to what Allah frowns at, and to show gratitude to Him for sparing their lives.

Nigerian films excite at Durban Film Festival

THREE movies by Nigerian filmmakers are among the huge line-up of screening at the ongoing Durban International Film Festival.

Although the big one, Half of a Yellow Sun, had aroused interest based on huge publicity and its affiliation with the British Film Institute (BFI), B for Boy by Chika Anadu and Gone Too Far by Bola Agbaje also made interesting outing with their thought-provoking themes.

Half of a Yellow Sun, which will be released in Nigeria on August 1, was sold out during its first showing last Friday at Suncoast, one of the several venues dedicated to screenings at the festival. The movie, a feature directorial debut by Nigerian/British playwright, Biyi Bandele, has continued to generate interest, going by its account of the Nigerian civil war, as re-enacted in Chimamanda Adichie’s book from which it was adapted.
