Mexico vs England

Mexico (2) vs England (3)

England vs Mexico 2-3: Ten-man Three Lions survive Azteca chaos to reach World Cup 2026 quarter-finals

If you went for a toilet break at the wrong time, you missed a goal. If you blinked twice, you missed two. England beat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in the Round of 16 at Mexico City Stadium, and it finished with 80,824 Mexicans roaring, 11 Englishmen hanging on for dear life, and one very tired VAR official.

The basics football fans need

What: FIFA World Cup 2026 – Round of 16, Mexico vs England

Location: Estadio Azteca, Mexico City

Time: Sunday July 5, 6pm local (00:00 GMT Monday), after a week of weather-delay rumours that FIFA swatted away

Result: Mexico 2-3 England, match status ended, winner England

Context: Mexico were chasing their first quarter-final since hosting in 1986. England were chasing their third straight quarter-final, last done in the 60s

How it unfolded, in glorious madness

First half was the Jude Bellingham Show. Jude Bellingham headed in a Bukayo Saka cross, then 98 seconds later tapped in a Harry Kane pass. Two touches, two goals, one minute of Mexican silence.

Mexico didn't fold. Julián Quiñones pulled one back before halftime, and the Azteca remembered it is 7,200 feet above sea level and very loud.

Second half started, and so did the chaos. Early after the restart, Jarell Quansah got a straight red after a VAR check in the 54th minute. Ten-man England, away in Mexico City, with 40 minutes to survive. Perfectly normal.

Southgate's men responded the only way England knows how, by winning a penalty. Kane converted. Then, in a plot twist even Netflix would reject, Kane conceded a penalty at the other end, and Raúl Jiménez slotted it home. 3-2, and suddenly every English fan was Googling heart medication.

The Sun's live blog called it a "wild win" and noted Jordan Henderson picked up an injury late on, because of course he did. Reuters summed it up cleaner: ten-man England survived a spirited Mexico fightback to book the quarters.

The game had actually kicked off about an hour late, which only gave everyone more time to get nervous, according to Indian coverage of the night.

Heroes, villains, and very tired legs

Bellingham

Two goals in a minute. At altitude. In a knockout game. Put a statue next to the hot-dog stand.

Kane

Scored a pen, gave away a pen, still walked off as captain. Efficiency.

Quansah: Red card at 54'. Will watch the quarter-final from the naughty step.

Jiménez: Cool as you like from the spot, and nearly the hero of a national holiday.

Mexico's crowd:

Made the Azteca shake. Didn't get the result, but reminded everyone why playing in Mexico City is a horror movie.  Tactical takeaway for the nerds

England didn't try to control possession after the red, they went full 2018, compact block, Saka and Bellingham as release valves, Kane dropping to kill seconds. Mexico threw crosses, cutbacks, and hope. Altitude helped the hosts press, but England's back line, down a man, defended the box like it owed them money. It was ugly, brave, and very on-brand for knockout football.

England are through to the World Cup 2026 quarter-finals for the third tournament in a row, a feat they last managed in 1962, 1966 and 1970. Mexico go out at the Round of 16, ending their deepest home run since 1986.

Next up for England: Norway in Miami. Why Norway? Because Erling Haaland just scored twice to dump Brazil 2-1 in their own Round of 16. Yes, you read that right.

Final word for football fans.

This was not pretty, it was not calm, and it was absolutely peak World Cup. England vs Mexico delivered a Bellingham brace, two penalties, a red card, a delayed kickoff, and ten men surviving in the Azteca. If you love football for the chaos, you got your money's worth.

Want a minute-by-minute meme recap or a tactical graphic of how England survived with ten? I can build that next.
