Baby Locked In Safe: Police Search For Parents

Canadian police are searching for a US couple after their baby ended up locked in a hotel safe.

The panicked parents, from Brooklyn, New York, had told hotel staff the child, who is less than a year old, was in the safe in their room.

A maintenance worker was then able to free the infant.
The baby was "alert and crying" when the safe was opened at the Howard Johnson Hotel by the Falls in Niagara Falls, police said.

But the parents, who were at the scene when the child was freed, left the hotel with the baby before police were told what happened by staff.

Officers believe the baby was small enough to fit in the safe, which is about 50 centimetres wide, 35 centimetres tall and 43 centimetres deep.

Detective Constable Amanda Sanders, of Niagara regional police's child abuse unit, said it was unclear how the baby came to be in the safe.

"At this point we don't know if it's anything more than a preventable accident," she said.
Ms Sanders cautioned that officers were still in the early stages of the investigation and they did not know the gender of the baby.

"Police wish to locate the family to ascertain the welfare of the child," the police service said in a news release.

US border services have also been notified about the incident but the van was not believed to have crossed back into America.

The family, who are thought to be Asian and do not speak much English, are thought to be travelling in a 2015 grey Ford van, with the license plate B31EUB.
