ARRESTED..The Gallant troops of the Army’s
1 Brigade have arrested a suspected notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, connected to the abduction and murder of the late Isa Muhammad Bawa, the Sarkin Gobir, a traditional ruler in Sokoto state.
The arrest, which followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, took place on December 14 around 10 pm in Shinkafi town, Zamfara state. Wurgi was reportedly receiving treatment for injuries sustained during a clash with a rival group.
Soldiers, on learning learned of his injuries, tracked his movements to the hospital. Two of his accomplices managed to escape, but Wurgi was apprehended and transported to the medical facility using a tricycle.
The arrest of Wurgi is seen as a significant breakthrough in the fight against banditry in the northwest region, which has been plagued by insecurity and targeted attacks on traditional rulers and civilians.
In September, three of the bandits, Kachalla Buzu alias Halilu Sububu, Blacky and one other, killed by the troops in Zamfara were identified to be among the killers of the late Sarkin Gobir.
According to Senator Shu’aibu Gwanda Gobir, the younger brother of the late monarch; “I have confirmed this from different sources. Halilu Sububu masterminded the abduction of the late emir. Alhamdulillah, they have now paid the price of their actions in the hands of Nigerian troops".
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, last week, deployed a Special Operations Brigade to the Northwest region.
