Lake Chad famine: Over 21 million affected in four West African countries

Over 15 top UN envoys are travelling to West Africa's Lake Chad region to draw attention to a famine that has affected over 21 million people across four countries. Drought, sectarian violence, and poor governance have created hunger crises in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
According to British Ambassador to the United Nations Mathew Rycroft, the UN visit is aimed at shining an international spotlight on the region's problems. It is hoped that the trip will result in increased humanitarian aid for West Africans facing starvation.
