National Youth Conference 2026: FG Says Nigerian Youths Must Move From Beneficiaries to Leaders

70% of Nigeria's population is under 30. Yet how many young Nigerians are actually in the room where decisions are made?

That was the big question as the National Youth Conference 2026 opened in Abuja.

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development has called for greater and meaningful participation of young Nigerians in decision-making, leadership and governance.

Speaking at the opening, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Maryam Ismaila Keshinro, said youth inclusion is no longer optional — it is essential for Nigeria’s national development.

According to her, young Nigerians should not be seen only as beneficiaries of development, but as partners, innovators, entrepreneurs and future leaders.

Why This Conference Matters for Every Young Nigerian

This is not just another government talk shop. The National Youth Conference 2026 was created as a direct platform for young Nigerians — both physical and virtual participants from across the 36 states — to table their aspirations, priorities and ideas that will shape national policy.

The conference brings together youth leaders, government officials, development partners, and members of the Nigerian Youth Parliament.

5 Key Issues FG Says Will Dominate The Conference

Keshinro listed the core agenda that will affect you directly:

1. Youth Participation, Leadership and Governance

How can youths truly get into politics and leadership, not just as social media supporters?

2. Jobs, Entrepreneurship and Economic Opportunities

The Ministry noted Nigeria's youth bulge can only become a demographic dividend if young people get real access to skills, financing and business opportunities.

3. Education and Skills Development

Focus is on quality education, technical and vocational training, digital skills, and access to emerging technologies to help Nigerian youths compete globally.

4. Climate Action, Digital Rights and Peace Building

Discussions will also cover climate action, digital rights, peace building and national unity.

5. National Unity and the Role of NYSC

Keshinro highlighted the role of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), established in 1973 after the Civil War to promote national integration. She described Nigeria's diversity as one of its greatest strengths and urged youths to promote dialogue, tolerance and inclusion.

Beyond Talk: Will This Lead To Real Action?

This is the part many Nigerian youths are watching.

The Permanent Secretary said the success of the conference will not be measured by fine speeches, but by the ability to translate ideas into practical and measurable actions.

She assured that the Federal Ministry of Youth Development will document all outcomes and consider them in advancing national youth development priorities. She also urged participants to speak openly, listen respectfully and propose realistic solutions.

Now the question is: Will it happen?
