El-Rufai Religious Bill: Groups To Nigerians – Reject Attempt To Muzzle Freedom Of Worship

Abuja – A coalition of Human Rights orgianisations in Nigeria challenged Nigerians particularly Kaduna State residents and indigenes to as a matter of urgency and national interest raise their voices in condemnation of the subtle plot by Governor Nasir El-Rufai to deploy resources of the state to crush religious pluralism and fundamental freedoms of worship a enshrined in the 1999 constitution (as amended).

The groups equally tasked Nigerians to rise in unison and reject attempts by Governor El-Rufail to muzzle their freedom of worship which is guaranteed under the law.
Leaders of the Human Rights coalition, Emmanuel Onwubiko of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and Esther Orok of the Association of African Writers On Human and People's Rights (AFRIRIGHT), said in Abuja on Monday that the Constitution does not give room for states to adopt a religion as a state religion.
According to the groups; "We recognized the validity and sanctity of section 10 of the Nigeria constitution which clearly spells out in black and white that the government of the federation or of a state shall not adopt any religion as a state religion.
"Millions of people have already questioned the public good in that anti-religious freedom promulgation which the Kaduna State government intends to enact which seeks to limit freedoms of movement, freedom of associations and freedom of conscience as enshrined in the relevant section of chapter four of the constitution" they said.
They therefore called on residents of Kaduna state to fight against the draconian attempt to muzzle their basic fundamental freedoms and freedom of worship.
They assured that they will soon announce other measures to confront the brazen and naked attempt to oust exercise of religious freedoms of some considerable millions of Nigerians.
