Pope Leo XIV Meets Clerical Abuse Survivors in Lourdes, France

Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV has met privately with seven survivors of clerical sexual abuse in Lourdes, France, during his first official visit to the country. The meeting highlights the Catholic Church’s continuing efforts to support survivors, address past abuse, and pursue institutional reforms.

The Pope’s visit to Lourdes, one of the world’s most significant Catholic pilgrimage destinations, comes amid renewed attention to allegations of abuse within the French Catholic Church. A 2021 investigation estimated that approximately 330,000 people were abused as minors by clergy or other members of the Church in France over seven decades.

During his four-day France visit, Pope Leo XIV also celebrated Mass in Paris, where Vatican officials estimated that around 800,000 people attended. He called for peace, human rights and leaders committed to serving the common good.

The Lourdes visit also carries historical significance. The Pope is the third pontiff to visit Lourdes, following Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 and Pope John Paul II, who visited in 1983 and 2004.
