Benefit of Watermelon

watermelon
More than a sweet summertime treat, watermelon contains vitamins, minerals, water and other substances that are healthful and help protect your body from disease. Like most other types of melon, watermelon is low in calories, fat and sodium, but still rich in flavor, so it is an excellent food if you are watching your weight or restricting your fat or salt intake. To get the most nutritional benefit from a watermelon, choose one with ripe, red flesh.

Vitamins

Watermelon is a good source of vitamins A, C, B6 and thiamin. Vitamin A is important for healthy skin, eyes, teeth and bones. Vitamin C helps maintain healthy skin, mouth and mucous membranes, and is important in the process of wound healing. Eating foods rich in vitamin C also helps your body absorb more iron from plant food sources. Vitamin B6 helps your body use protein and produce red blood cells. Thiamin, another B vitamin, is important for carbohydrate metabolism and normal heart and nerve cell functions.

Minerals

Although not a great source of minerals, watermelon supplies fair amounts of potassium and magnesium. Potassium plays an important role in energy production and helps maintain normal nerve and muscle function. Magnesium helps your body build protein and convert sugar into energy.

Water Content

Since watermelon is more than 90 percent water, it makes a substantial contribution to your daily fluid intake. This is important all year round, but essential during hot weather when, coincidentally, watermelon is in great supply.

Low Calorie

A 1-cup serving of diced watermelon supplies 46 calories and virtually no fat. That makes watermelon a good, healthy choice for a snack, fruit dessert or fruit side dish in any diet designed to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Lycopene

Lycopene, a natural red pigment found in plant foods such as tomatoes, pink or red grapefruit, guava and watermelon, is also an antioxidant, which means it fights the destruction of cells that can lead to health problems such as cancer and heart disease. Red watermelon has one of the highest lycopene levels of any commonly eaten fresh fruit or vegetable. Orange and yellow varieties of watermelon, however, contain considerably less lycopene.

Citrulline

Watermelon is an excellent source of citrulline, an amino acid that is converted in your body to arginine, another amino acid that is necessary for human health. Arginine helps keep your heart and immune system healthy and functioning properly.

Seeds

In some countries, dried watermelon seeds are eaten as snacks. The seeds contain concentrated amounts of many of the same nutrients found in the flesh.
