Rotimi Akerelodu |
Rotimi Akeredolu, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared the Ondo State governor-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Akeredolu, under the ruling APC scored 244,842 votes to defeat 27 other contestants in the polls that held on Saturday.
Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede, emerged second with total votes of 150,380 while Olusola Oke of the AD scored 126,889 votes to come third, said the electoral body.
Akeredolu, who was preferred candidate of the National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, won in 14 of 18 local governments in Ondo State to emerge next governor of the state.
It would be recalled, however, that the first runner-up, Mr. Jegede, had had a short and troubled campaign due to the controversy that trailed his recognition by INEC as the authentic candidate of the PDP.
THE WHISTLER further recalls that Jegede’s rival and former candidate of the Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction of the PDP, Jimoh Ibrahim, was caught on tape attesting to being planted by the ruling APC to distract him (Jegede) from having a smooth election campaigns.
Reports had emerged, Saturday, that the Director-General of Rotimi Akeredolu Campaign Organisation, Mr. Victor Olabimtan, was allegedly caught with 15 Ghana must go bags of thumb printed ballot papers by security operatives in Ondo while election was ongoing.
