The world’s oldest sitting Head of State, President Paul Biya of Cameroon, has announced his intention to run for re-election in October 2025 , a move that could extend his already 43-year grip on power.

In a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the 92-year-old leader said his decision to contest once again came after “numerous and insistent” calls from citizens at home and abroad.

“Rest assured that my determination to serve you matches the urgency of the challenges we face,” Biya stated, signalling his readiness to continue as president despite rising public pressure for leadership renewal.

President Biya, who first assumed office in 1982, has never lost an election and controversially removed term limits in 2008, making it possible for him to run indefinitely. If successful in the October polls, he could remain in office until he turns 99.
