Oluwarotimi O. Akeredolu Jnr, the son of the late Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has said his father died in his sleep while receiving treatment for prostate cancer in Germany.
Oluwarotimi made this revelation in a statement he released on Wednesday evening, appreciating all those who felt sympathetic towards his father’s death and showed love to the bereaved family.
He added that the burial arrangement of his father would be communicated to the public in due time and urged people to allow his family to enjoy their privacy in this mourning period.
The statement reads: “He died peacefully departed in his sleep at a Hospital in Germany, where he was undergoing treatment for protracted prostate cancer. While we are deeply saddened and devastated by his departure, we find solace in the understanding that as he transitions to eternity, he will be guided by the benevolent hands of the angels of light, with whom he resided during his remarkable and fruitful journey on Earth.
“During this challenging time, we sincerely appreciate everyone who has stood by us and extended their support since the news broke. We humbly request your prayers and support, while also asking for privacy as we navigate through this trying period.
“Details regarding the burial arrangements will be announced by the family and the State Government in due course.”
The Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa had also declared three days of mourning for Akeredolu in a press statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan.
The statement reads: “In a solemn declaration, the Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has announced a three-day period of State mourning in honour of the late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, former Governor of Ondo State, who died in the early hours of Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
“This period of mourning, with fasting and prayer, takes effect from Thursday, December 28 to Saturday, December 30, 2023. Also, all national flags are to be flown at half-mast in reflection of the mood of the State for seven days.
“The Governor also announced the suspension of State government ceremonies during this period of mourning.
“Meanwhile, condolence registers have been opened at the Governor’s Office and the Government House in Akure, as well as State Liaison Offices in Lagos and Abuja.”
“May the soul of our late leader rest in perfect peace, Amen,” the statement adds.
