INEC denies having investigated Tinubu, says the circulated statement is false

The Indeppendent National Electoral Commission has debunked an alleged claim that it has launched an investigation into a criminal forfeiture case against the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.

The commission, in a statement by it National Commissioner and Chairman of the Voter Information and Education Committee, Festus Okoye, in Abuja on Saturday, described the statement as fake news and the work of miscreants.

“A press release purportedly issued by the Commission has been trending online since yesterday, Friday, November 11, 2022,” Okoye said of the fake press release suggesting that INEC was investigating Tinubu.

“Affirms that the commission has launched an investigation into a criminal forfeiture case against one of the presidential candidates in the upcoming general election and is in contact with a court in the United States of America to determine the possible violation of our guidelines or the Law Election 2022.

“We wish to state categorically that said press release did not emanate from the commission or pursue the alleged course of action. It is the work of naughty people and completely false.”

The fake press release claimed that INEC was investigating Mr. Tinubu for a controversial 1993 seizure he made from the US government when he was being investigated for alleged links to a drug ring.

Denying the false statement, Mr. Okoye said that INEC press releases are uploaded to the INEC Press Corps platform and simultaneously disseminated through the commission’s website and official social media handles.
