JUST IN: Boko Haram insurgents step on bomb planted for Nigerian Army

Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter of Boko Haram, are currently conducting funeral prayers for six Mujahideens (those engaged in jihad) at Agikur Mosque between Biu and Damboa Local Government Area (LGAs) of Borno State, North East Nigeria.

We learned that the insurgents stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they planted for Nigerian Army troops in Nguma village on Thursday.

The actual number of casualties is not clear.

Since 2009, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has been grappling with attacks in the northeast by armed groups like Boko Haram and its offshoot, ISWAP. The terrorists are fighting to establish a separate state.

More than 35,000 people have died and millions have been displaced by the violence, according to the United Nations (UN) Development Program.

President Muhammadu Buhari said earlier this week that the war against the groups is “approaching its conclusion”, citing continued military attacks and the mass defection of thousands of the fighters.

The violence however continues in border communities and areas closer to the Lake Chad region, the stronghold of the Islamic State-linked group, ISWAP.
