Okra also known as lady fingers is one of the most popular vegetables in Nigeria, it is mainly used for the preparation of okra soup which is popular amongst the igbos of Nigeria. However, there are other ways of consuming okra. When prepared into a sauce, it can be used to eat yam or cocoyam. In this article, I will be showing you what okra soup does to your blood sugar level if you consume it regularly.

Okra is low in calories, with just 30 calories per 100g. They are said to be good for the body because of their low saturated fat, non-toxic nature and rich nutrients content. Consuming okra regularly will surely improve your health.


Okra is notable for its anti-diabetic properties. Research carried out in 2011 in India proves that okra is effective in lowering glucose levels, as researchers saw a considerable reduction in the blood glucose levels of mice fed with dried and crushed okra peels. Aside from scientific research, people who are suffering from diabetes also notice a massive decrease in their blood sugar level after soaking okra in water and drinking.

Consuming okra soup is advisable for those who are diagnosed with diabetes because various research has proven it effective in the stabilization of blood glucose owing to its high insoluble fiber content.

Okra is also rich in many vital nutrients like antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, hence making it very good for the body. However, you are advised to consult your doctor first before taking any natural remedy.

It is also important to note that eating okra soup with garri or pounded yam may have adverse effects on your blood sugar level, instead you should go for pounded unripe plantain or oatmeal fufu.
