Lionel Messi at PSG: Goals, assists, results & fixtures in 2021-22

Lionel Messi is now up and running with his new adventure in Paris, as the Argentina international looks to put his time in Barcelona behind him and prove that he can be just as effective at a new club.

The world star shocked the entire sport in the summer, when La Liga rules made it impossible for Barca to renew the player’s contract and as such Messi was forced to move.

Six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi was emotional at his departing press conference at Camp Nou, making it clear he had left the club against his will.

Messi had spent 17 years in the Barcelona first team and won the Champions League four times.

Once his departure was confirmed, Messi very quickly opted for a new challenge at PSG, a team who are craving their first European crown.

How well is the forward doing at his new club?

Messi made his PSG debut as a second-half substitute against Reims on August 29, 2021, and it was a quiet beginning as his new team eased to a 2-0 win.

The 34-year-old was then handed his first PSG start in the Champions League trip to Brugge on September 15, his side suffering frustration in a disappointing 1-1 draw where he did not score.

The former Barcelona star was left waiting for his first goal after another blank in the match against Lyon, a fixture which he again started. He did hit the crossbar with a trademark free-kick but was then substituted after 76 minutes, a decision he reacted angrily to by refusing the hand of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Messi missed the 2-1 win at Metz on September 22 due to a knee injury and also sat out the 2-0 victory over Montpellier three days later as his frustrating start to life in Paris continued.

However, the star finally came to life on the biggest of stages when he played a vital role in beating Manchester City and his former coach Pep Guardiola in the Champions League, with a remarkable strike in the 2-0 victory giving him his first PSG goal.

But in the very next game Messi was brought crashing back down to Earth as PSG's eight-match winning start to Ligue 1 came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at Rennes.

After the international break, Messi missed out on PSG's 2-1 win over Angers at Parc des Princes as he returned back too late from Argentina duty to be considered.
