Costa Rica Edges Italy 1-0 To Clinch A Spot In World Cup Round Of 16 (VIDEO)
With two wins in its first two matches at the 2014 World Cup, Costa Rica has clinched a spot in the Round of 16 in Brazil. After shocking Uruguay in its opener, Costa Rica edged Italy 1-0 in a tense Group D clash at Arena Pernambuco in Recife on Friday.
The lone goal of the match came just before halftime when midfielder Bryan Ruiz got his head to a cross from Junior Diaz. The ball deflected off the crossbar and bounced down into the goal. Goal-line technology confirmed that the ball had crossed the line. The goal came just moments after Costa Rica felt it should have been awarded a penalty kick for an apparent foul on striker Joel Campbell in the Italy penalty area.
The result guaranteed Costa Rica a spot in the Round of 16 and eliminated England from contention. It also raised the stakes for the match between Italy and Uruguay on June 24. Both teams have one win (over England) and one loss (to Costa Rica) through two matches and can advance with a second win. Currently ahead on goal differential, Italy would advance to the Round of 16 if the teams should tie.

How is alcohol metabolized?
How is alcohol metabolized?
Have you ever wondered why you feel the way that you do after drinking alcohol? Many people will admit that they drink to get that feeling, but not many know exactly what is going on to cause it. The effects that alcohol has on your health start with how it's metabolized. Once alcohol is in your system, your body makes metabolizing it a priority. That means that it will stop metabolizing anything else in order to first get the alcohol metabolized. The reason for this is because unlike protein, carbohydrates, and fat, there is nowhere for alcohol to be stored in our body so it has be metabolized first.
Once alcohol enters your stomach, up to 20% of it can be absorbed there and go directly into your bloodstream. Within minutes, alcohol will reach your brain and give the feeling of being a stimulant. No other nutrient is able to do this. The remaining alcohol goes to your intestines and is absorbed there with the rest of the nutrients. A small amount of alcohol is excreted through sweat, saliva, urine, and your breath, which is how it is detected by a Breathalyzer.
Your liver is the primary site for alcohol metabolism; this is why you can have liver problems from consuming too much alcohol. Alcohol is detoxified and removed from the blood through a process called oxidation. Oxidation prevents the alcohol from accumulating and destroying cells and organs. A healthy liver oxidizes pure ethanol at the rate of about ¼ to ⅓ of an ounce per hour, which is less than 1 ounce of hard liquor.
When you drink alcohol, your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) will rise rapidly. Within five minutes of having a drink, there's enough alcohol in your blood to measure. The BAC is determined by how quickly alcohol is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted. The following factors can influence the BAC:
Gender
Race
Food consumed with the alcohol
Chronic alcohol consumption
Drinking pattern
Medications
The consumption of one standard drink will result in a peak in BAC within 35 to 45 minutes. A 150-pound person with normal liver function metabolizes about 7 to 14 grams of alcohol per hour, which is approximately 100 to 200 mg/kg of body weight per hour. This is comparable to 8 to 12 ounces of beer or half of an alcoholic drink. Controlling the rate of consumption will give your liver time to metabolize the alcohol and limit your BAC. Once you stop drinking, your blood alcohol level decreases by about 0.01% per hour. You are legally intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.8. Time is the only way to eliminate alcohol from your system, so cold showers and coffee will not sober you up. Trying to get someone who is drunk to feel and appear more alert can cause a false sense of sobriety to the person drinking and everyone around them.

What is alcohol?
Alcohol is a part of many social occasions, from family dinners to parties, to sporting events and nightcaps. The problems associated with alcoholism are well known, but what about the impact of social drinking or a moderate intake of alcohol? Does alcohol belong in our diet, or does the risk that it presents outweigh any benefits that may be derived from consuming it?
Good nutrition can help to improve your health and prevent diseases. The essential nutrients that your body needs are carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. The term "essential" means that if you remove one of these nutrients from your diet there will be a deficiency that causes health problems. Alcohol would not fall under the category of essential nutrients because there is no problem or disease state that occurs if you do not consume it. However, some argue that there are added health benefits from consuming alcohol and argue it should be added to our diets.
The key to determining whether you need alcohol is to understand what alcohol is and how it is processed in your body. Calories provide energy for our bodies to function. We get calories from carbohydrates, protein, fat, and alcohol. For each gram, you get a set number of calories.
The vitamin, mineral, and water content add to the nutritional value for each of these nutrients but do not provide any calories. The key to a healthy diet is to spend your calories on foods that provide a variety of vitamins and minerals without a lot of calories. Alcohol can do the exact opposite of this. It doesn't provide a lot of vitamins and minerals and you can easily get an entire meal's worth of calories from a few cocktails! Alcohol interferes with how your body processes and stores nutrients so the healthy foods that you do eat don't get to do their job.
Many people do not realize that alcohol can be classified as a drug. Under this category, it is the most widely used drug in the world. According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, in the United States, 17.6 million people - about one in every 12 adults - abuse alcohol or are alcohol dependent. The majority of the population consumes alcohol moderately or occasionally, but that does not mean that it's not a problem. You do not need to be an alcoholic for alcohol to interfere with your health and life. The potential to become addicted to alcohol is a serious problem that can affect anyone. Alcohol is not an essential nutrient in your diet and limits need to be followed on how much and how often it is consumed.
How is alcohol made?
Alcohol, also known as ethanol, is made through a process called fermentation. During fermentation, yeast breaks sugar down into ethanol and carbon dioxide. This process is done without any air present and once complete, the carbon dioxide gas bubbles out into the air, leaving ethanol and water behind. Distilled spirits, such as vodka, rum, gin, and whiskey, are fermented and then distilled to separate the ethanol from the water.
Various sources of sugar are used in these processes, resulting in different forms of alcohol. The sugar from crushed grapes is used to make wine; malted barley is used to make beer; sugar cane or molasses makes rum; grain, potatoes, beets, molasses, and a variety of other plants are used to make vodka.
The technique used to make the beverage will determine the alcohol content. You will see the percentage of alcohol per volume listed on the bottle, as well as the proof of the drink. The proof of a beverage is twice the alcohol content, so a drink with 12% alcohol per volume is 24 proof. Generally, a 12-ounce glass of beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, and a 1.5-ounce shot of liquor all contain a ½ ounce of pure alcohol and are considered one drink.

N10bn Jet Scam: Court Orders Reps To Stop Probe Of Alison-madueke, NNPC
ABUJA—A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday, aborted moves by the House of Representatives to commence hearing on the allegation that the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke, spent about N10 billion on chartered private jets.
In a ruling yesterday, Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed, ordered the legislative house to shelve its plans to begin probe into the allegation on June 25.
The judge further directed all the parties to maintain status quo till July 3, a date the High Court slated to hear the substantive suit that is challenging the powers of the Public Accounts Committee, PAC, of the House of Representatives to investigate such allegation.
The court order was sequel to an oral application made by counsel to the minister, Mr. Etigwe Uwa (SAN), who, yesterday, informed the court that despite the pendency of the suit, the House, on May 23, wrote a letter to the Petroleum Minister and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, asking them to ensure that they appeared before its probe committee on June 25, 26 and 27.
Uwa told the court that the House had in the said letter threatened that it would not hesitate to invoke its powers and issue a warrant of arrest against the minister should she fail to appear before the committee on the aforementioned dates.
He said: “My Lord, the 2nd defendant in particular (House of Reps), in their letter to my clients, said they noted with dismay that we approached this court in a bid to stop them from performing their constitutional duties. They also boasted that no arm of the government has the power to stop them.”
Letter of undertaking
Besides, Uwa told the court that they had already written a letter to counsel to the House of Reps, Mr. A. B. Mahmood (SAN), requesting him to enter an undertaking that his client would not take any action capable of overreaching or jeopardising the ‘Res’ of the dispute before the high court.
He said: “We sought an undertaking from him that his client will not proceed with the hearing as planned so as not to destroy the ‘Res’ of this suit or make nonsense of the proceeding before this court.
“If they are allowed to conduct the hearing, our suit, which has already been granted an accelerated hearing, will be overtaken by events and thus occasion an irreparable damage on my client.”
The House of Reps, through its lawyer, Mr. Aminu Sadauki, insisted that the court lacked the requisite powers to stop it from going ahead with the planned probe.
According to the House, “we cannot enter an undertaken on behalf of an arm of government carrying out its constitutional duty.
“If my Lordship makes the order as prayed by the plaintiff, it would amount to granting their reliefs even before hearing the substantive suit. I, therefore, urge this court to refuse this application.”
On its part, the National Assembly, which was joined as the 1st defendant in the matter, through its counsel Mr. Obasi Nwabueze, said they were equally served with a letter from the plaintiff seeking the maintenance of status quo.
Nwabueze said his client resolved to leave the issue to the discretion of the court.
Court berates House
After listening to all the parties, Justice Mohammed stressed that though Section 4 of the 1999 Constitution conferred exclusive powers on the National Assembly, he however noted that Section 6 of the same constitution imbued the court with the statutory powers to mediate and adjudicate disputes involving any organ of the government.
He berated the House for accusing the court of attempting to usurp its constitutionally guaranteed oversight function, noting that the 2nd defendant, having already briefed a lawyer and submitted itself before the court, ought to have shown respect to the court by putting its planned action in abeyance pending the outcome of the suit.
Justice Mohammed ruled: “The court has the inherent power to intervene with a view to protecting its sanctity and integrity. Consequently, I hereby direct parties in this suit to maintain status quo from now till the next adjourned date.”
Minister, NNPC’s suit
It will be recalled that the Petroleum Minister and NNPC, in their joint suit, prayed the court for an order of interim injunction restraining the defendants, whether by themselves, their members, committees or agents from summoning or directing them to appear before any committee, particularly PAC, which was set up by the House of Reps to conduct the investigation.
Besides, the plaintiffs sought for an order of the court stopping the House of Reps committee from asking any official of the ministry or NNPC to produce any paper, note or other documents or give any evidence in line with a letter from the House dated March 26, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
They are further urging the court to issue an order of interim injunction restraining the defendants from issuing a warrant to compel the Minister’s attendance, or the attendance of any official of the ministry or NNPC, with regard to the investigation and to also in the alternative, make an order of status quo, directing the parties to maintain the current position with regard to the investigation, as of the date of filing of the suit.

90-yr-old Woman Leads Protest Over Abandoned Road In Bayelsa
Yenagoa—Angry indigenes of Okoroba community in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, led by a 90-year- old woman, Madam Omiekumo Numo, yesterday, protested against the abandonment of the Opume-Okoroba Road project by the Federal Government.
The 10 km road project, which is to link the coastal town of Okoroba to mainland Ogbia Local Government Area, was awarded in 2011 to Mangrovtech, now known as Kakatar’ce by Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
The project, it was learnt, was abandoned on the grounds of alleged disagreement over compensation and non- availability of sand.

The aggrieved indigene of the community, who braved the swampy stretch of the road to stage a peaceful protest some distance away from the Opume Junction, however, noted that the decision of NDDC to award the project to the construction firm, owned by an indigene of Ogbia, was laudable.
Armed with placards, some of which read: “EFFC: Probe payment of Compensation,” “NDDC save Our Soul,” “We say No to delay,” “Enough is Enough: Give us back our road,” “Sand is not an excuse,” among others, the aggrieved indigenes led by Madam Omiekuma Numo, said they were compelled to spend about three hours trekking through the swampy road which ordinarily they would have spent less than 15 minutes on, if the work had been completed.
According to the nonagenarian, “Our people are suffering and my children have abandoned me in the village due to the bad road. I am hungry and I woke up since 5a.m., to join the three hours protest march through the muddy water on the abandoned road to show you how serious and pained we are as a people.”

The four men had on separate occasions individually raped different women, also stealing from the women after raping them
At a press briefing yesterday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Chris Anyanwu narrated how the four men carried out their evil acts. See that below...
"On June 8, Mrs. Hanna Augustine Chukwu, 82, a native of Umuira Okposi in Ohaozara Local Government Area, boarded a commuter bus from Enugwulangwu road. The driver, one John Isaac, dropped other passengers and on noticing that the woman was the only one left in the bus, stopped and dragged her to the rear side of the vehicle and raped her. Nigeria Explosion Kills 13 At World Cup Viewing Center
At least 13 people including young children were killed when a bomb tore through a venue in Northeast Nigeria where fans had gathered to watch a World Cup soccer match, witnesses said.
Some people at the scene told Reuters an attacker dropped a device in front of the venue on Tuesday night in the town of Damaturu and ran off, while others said it was the work of a suicide bomber.
No one claimed responsibility for the blast, but Damaturu and the surrounding Yobe state are at the heart of a five-year-old insurgency by Islamist group Boko Haram.
The group was blamed for a an attack on another venue screening soccer matches in the northeastern state of Adamawa that killed at least 14 people and wounded 12..
A Reuters reporter at Damaturu's General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital counted 13 people dead - including small children - and at least 20 wounded.

The Truth About Smoking
* Don't smoke- Experiment from experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes (chances of cancer is higher).
* Don't eat fruits immediately -When you eat your fruits with meals, the fruit is stuck in the stomach along with the contents of the meals and cannot reach the intestines in time. Lying there they get spoilt and spoil the remaining food in the stomach too. Thus it is recommended that you eat a fruit at least one hour after eating a meal or before your meal and preferably in the morning with empty stomach. It is in the morning that the body can best use the nutrients in the fruit and get enough energy to start the day.
* Don't drink tea - Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest. It is preferable to drink tea an hour after meals.
* Don't loosen your belt -Fiction, not particularly bad for you!
We generally have an attitude that a good meal is that which forces us to loosen our belts. However, loosening the belt is bad, not because it causes the intestines to twist or block but because it means that you have over eaten to a level that you are uncomfortable. Loosening of the belt may also cause you to feel comfortable once again which means you may continue overeating.
So eat only to the extent that you can be comfortable without loosening your belt!
* Don't bathe - Bathing after meal will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs & body thus the amount of blood around the stomach will therefore decrease. This will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.
* Don't walk about -Fact, it is bad for you! Walking directly after meals is a bad idea, it can result to acid reflux and indigestion. However, walking about half an hour after meals is known to be good for you. Researchers in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina, have found that walking after exercise is a good way to burn energy.
The point to note is when to walk, you should ideally walk for about 10 minutes and only 20-30 minutes after meal to prevent acid reflux and stomach upsets.
* Don't sleep immediately - The food we intake will not be able to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric & infection in our intestine.

Shooting in Las Vegas
Two people have shot and killed two police officers in the US city of Las Vegas, before killing another person and then shooting themselves.
The incident began in a pizza cafe on Sunday, when a man and a woman shot at the two officers who were having lunch.
They then entered a Walmart shop nearby and shot one person dead, before committing suicide. Police say there are no other suspects in the shooting.

Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) (CFS)
The official mainstream medicine line on chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS) is that it is a "chronic inflammatory illness of undetermined origin that is suspected, but not proven, to have an autoimmune component, as many of those diagnosed with CFIDS have circulating antinuclear autoantibodies."
This misguided understanding of what CFIDS actually is explains why mainstream medicine has been of no use to people with this "syndrome." In fact, the use of the word "syndrome" belies the fact that they do not understand the causation or treatment. When a doctor tells you that you have a "syndrome" you can know that no help is forthcoming. Typically, such doctors recommend "antidepressants." Patients leave their offices with diminished respect for medicine because they know what they have is not depression.
Many alternative medicine practitioners, on the other hand, grasp that CFIDS has something to do with toxicity and they approach the illness with various methods of "detoxification." However, the illness is not that simple and this explains why these practitioners achieve sometimes fair, but temporary, results. Usually a patient with chronic fatigue ends up self-treating because no one seems to understand the illness.
One possible symptoms of CFIDS is chronic oppressive muscular pain, a condition which has been termed fibromyalgia.
In fact, the cause of CFIDS is a condition of heavy metal (usually mercury) toxicity/overload complexed with an intestinal gut wall chronic inflammation. That is the briefest of definitions which does not even hint at the complexity of treatment and surely requires explanation.
But, before I explain the cause and proper treatment of this disorder, let me list possible symptoms of CFIDS (no one has all of these symptoms, but if you have CFIDS, you will recognize many of these in yourself):
constant relentless fatigue, helped little by rest
reduction of activity by 50% or more
severe muscular weakness
chronic pain in muscles
attention deficit
difficulty concentrating
difficulty calculating
memory disturbance
spatial disorientation
getting lost in familiar locations
difficulty judging distances
often saying wrong word
often forgetting a common word
sleep disturbance
headache
changes in visual acuity
seizures
numbness
tingling
lightheadedness
feeling spaced out
difficulty with balance
difficulty moving tongue to speak
ringing in ears
paralysis
blackouts
photophobia
alteration of in sense of taste
alteration of in sense of smell
alteration of in sense of hearing
sleep is non-restorative
decreased libido
twitching muscles
Conventional medicine was very slow to recognize the existence of CFIDS and many rigid doctors still deny that it exists. Those conventional doctors who do try to treat it use drugs, treating CFIDS as if it were depression, using anti-depressants. This approach is not only incorrect (i.e. the cause of CFIDS is not insufficient quantities of the latest drug pushed by the pharmaceutical industry), it is also ineffective.
How CFIDS Develops
Let me walk you through how CFIDS develops and this will make the treatment of the illness comprehensible. The lining of the gut is a delicate membrane and the wall of the gut behind it contains 80% of the immune system. These patches of immune or "lymphoid" tissue are called "Peyer's patches" for Dr. Peyers who described them over 100 years ago. When the digestive/immune system complex works correctly, the microflora (bacteria) in the food passing through the gut is closely regulated. Secretory A is an antibody which is placed on the surface of the gut wall and it kills off "bad" bacteria, fungus, and yeast. The integrity of the immune system in the gut wall depends on the integrity of the gut lining. If the gut lining breaks down and lesions appear, these lesions serve as entry points for pathogenic bacteria, fungus, and yeast. Once embedded in the gut wall, the toxicity these bacteria produce renders the immune system incapable of regulating the microflora still in the lumen of the gut and this produces "dysbiosis" (overgrowth of the "wrong" or "bad" organisms). The toxins released by this dysbiotic condition account for the symptoms of CFIDS.
Now, having said that, we come to understand the danger involved in "bad habits." Here are the bad habits which can lead to breakdown of the gut wall: (1) having dental work which involves metals, (2) overuse of antibiotics, (3) long-term and frequent consumption of coffee, (4) long-term and frequent consumption of alcohol, (5) smoking, and (6) stressing oneself and allowing this to go on for extended periods. In people who are susceptible (and this has something to do with genetics and "constitution") the gut lining (which is one cell layer in thickness and is called the "endothelium") develops tiny holes large enough to admit micro-organisms. The development of these tiny holes is called "leaky gut." In some rare individuals this is a constant state of affairs and can actually be measured by lab tests. In most people these tiny holes are rapidly repaired, however not before the opportunity for invasion by micro-organisms has occurred.
Once in the gut wall, micro-organisms invade Peyer's patches and quickly disable the immune system - not completely, but enough that the organisms can live in the gut wall. This is a kind of "Mexican stand-off." If two men are both armed with knives ready to strike, no one should strike since both will die. Thus, the chronic infection which develops in the gut wall does not kill the patient, but merely disables him/her. As the immune system hits the skids and dysbiosis takes over, the symptoms in the list above begin to appear.
How To Treat and Cure CFIDS
Understanding the "pathogenesis" of CFIDS allows us to shut it down. Here are the steps:
(1) The offending agent or agents must be eliminated. Mercury and other metals, antibiotics, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, and excessive stress all have to go. That sounds easy, but when the patient has a mouth full of dental metals, it become a big expensive project and here one encounters dentists who have no idea of the damage they are doing to some people by installing tons of dental metals. There is no dental work which cannot be done free of metals, but there are dentists who can't do that work and there are other dentists who refuse to do that work. Here we encounter the existence of institutionalized ignorance and take it from me, you will not be able to educate or change your dentist and his/her point of view. What you have to do is find a "metal free dentist" and they are rare. Those dentists trained in the Netherlands are a good choice as it is illegal to install mercury in human beings in that culture, but those people are not commonly found in the U.S. (although we have one here in Santa Rosa). Also, when metals are drilled out, they vaporize ("sublimate") and part of it is inhaled. Therefore, one should have the dental work done and then go straight to a doctor (and these are also rare) who can give an IV to chelate out the inhaled metals within two hours - before it is methylated by the liver and deposited in the brain and spinal cord.
(2) When the mouth is free of metal, it is time to test for the "residual metal burden." The source of metal may have been the dental work, but the real problem (where the rubber meets the road) is the metal that has migrated to the rest of the body over those years of exposure. This test is called a "Challenge Test." A chelating agent is given (usually intravenously) and a six hour urine collection is then analyzed for the toxic metals excreted. A plain blood or urine test will be negative unless exposure to large amounts of mercury or other metals has occurred in the last two days because of the fact that toxic metals are stored inside cells and are not available for measurement in blood or urine. (Many doctors do not understand this point.)
(3) When the results of that test are in, the doctor will better be able to prescribe oral or intravenous chelation to bring down the levels of toxic metals. The higher the levels revealed by the test, the lower should be the dose of oral or IV chelation. The reason for this is the fact that too rapid removal of metals can raise the blood levels to intolerable heights. (Metals have to traverse the blood when they come out of cells in order to reach the kidneys and liver to be excreted.) The process of metal detox will require anywhere from one to eight months.
(4) When metal detox is complete (and completion is proven by another Challenge Test), the final phase of treatment can begin. This involves the SanPharma Protocol, a use of the SanPharma Remedies devised to regenerate the immune system. Until this is accomplished, the patients with CFIDS will not recover and unless this last step is taken, there is little reason to do the first three steps. The SanPharma Remedies are a German product and they are classified as "isopathics." American medicine has nothing in this category, so we are indebted to the Germans for developing these wonderful remedies. They consist of specific compounds isolated from pathogenic bacteria which safely and effectively train the immune system to deal with these organisms. The protocol requires eleven weeks and for most people there is a small maintenance program which prevents CFIDS from making a come-back.

Carbohydrates in Nutrition
Carbohydrates come in three basic forms: simple, refined, and complex. Simple carbs are one, two, or at most three units of sugar linked together in single molecules. Refined carbs are made of flour so that means foods like pastries, breads, and pastas. Flour has been stripped of its cellulose (fiber) and almost all of its nutritional value. Simple and refined carbs are referred to as “empty calories.” These calories require vitamins and minerals to be metabolized, but supply none of those requirements. Thus they drain the body of stored nutrients. Refined carbs are hundreds or thousands of sugar units linked together in single molecules.
Simple sugars are easily identified by their taste: sweet. Most people know to avoid excess simple sugars. The same alarms do not go off when consuming breads and pastas, although they should since these items convert to simple sugar within minutes of consumption. Potatoes and rice are not very different in that respect.
Complex carbs come in two varieties: high fiber and low fiber. The main stuff in high-fiber, complex carbs which is cellulose. Fiber is not digestible by human beings because we do not have the enzyme (cellulase) to do the job. Cows and other ruminants do not make cellulase either, but they can get calories out of grass because they have a bacteria which can break down cellulose for them.
High-fiber (high-cellulose) vegetable foods (not grass of course) are the healthiest choices for human nutrition, and the ingestion is associated with lowered incidences of hypertension, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, etc. Examples are lettuce and broccoli. Examples of low-fiber, complex carbs are potatoe, rice, banana, tomato, squash and all cereals and grains (therefore bread and pasta), potatoes and rice.
After digestion, carbohydrates appear in the circulatory system in the simple form, as glucose, on its way to the cells where it is used for energy. To be transformed into simple sugars, refined carbs must be digested by the enzyme amylase. Amylase is secreted by the salivary glands, which empty into the mouth, and by the pancreas, which empties into the head of the duodenum.
Simple sugars, refined carbohydrates, and low-fiber, complex carbs represent a threat to health when they are consumed in inappropriate amounts such as may occur in low-soy, vegetarian diets where they are being eaten to replace the calories which would ordinarily come from protein.
Processing of plant food strips away its fiber and/or vitamin content. A simple example of processing is cutting an orange in two pieces, pressing the juice into a glass and discarding the fiber.
While it is true that fiber is an important part of your diet, even necessary to protect you from some diseases, carbohydrates themselves are not necessary. There are “essential” fatty acids and “essential” amino acids (from protein), however there are no known essential carbohydrates.
Most of our carbohydrates come from cereals and grains, both products of the agricultural revolution. Our bodies are not genetically designed to thrive on large amounts of these fiberless complex carbs. With the popularity of cereal-based and grain-based “health diets,” carbohydrate metabolism has been upset in approximately 3/4 of the population which simply cannot handle this large load of carbs. Increased insulin output from the pancreas, over the years, results in hyperinsulinism, insulin resistance and the resulting diseases mentioned above: hypertension, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis and heart disease.
Complex carbs with lots of fiber should be consumed in proper proportion for maximum health and vitality. Complex carbs with lots of fiber are rich sources of necessary vitamins and minerals as well as enzymes when in the raw state. The problem happens when carbohydrates are altered by processes which provide empty calories stripped of much of their original food value.
I should also mention the relationship between simple sugars and mucus formation. The biochemical name for mucus is mucopolysaccharide. This literally means “mucus of many sugars,” and it tells us how mucus is formed through the linking together of sugar molecules. If you have a condition, such as asthma or emphysema, in which mucus is part of the problem, you can do yourself a lot of good by stopping your intake of simple sugars and lowering your intake of refined carbohydrates. (which convert to simple sugars upon digestion). Unfortunately, this means such wonderful sweet fruits as plums, peaches, apples, etc., must go along with breads, pastas and pastries.
The most healthy form of sugar is the complex carbohydrates present in high-fiber vegetables; however, it is certainly acceptable to spice up your diet in moderation with simple sugars in the form of whole fruits in moderation. Eat your fruits, do not juice them and drink them, unless you are on a juice fast. Eating the whole fruit results in the inclusion of natural fiber, which allows proper absorption of sugars. If you must have juice, dilute it with twice the recommended amount of water, so as to get the taste without overdosing on simple sugars.
The Result of Excess Carbohydrate Intake
Excess carbohydrates also causes generalized vascular disease. The high-carbohydrate diet which is now so popular causes the pancreas to produce large amounts of insulin, and if this happens for many years in a genetically predisposed person, the insulin receptors throughout the body become resistant to insulin. Because insulin's action is to drive glucose into the cells, this results in chronic hyperglycemia, also called "high blood sugar." A large portion of this sugar is stored as fat resulting in obesity. Excess insulin also causes hypertension and helps initiate the sequence of events in the arterial wall which leads to atherosclerosis and heart disease.
Adult onset diabetes is known to be greatly benefited by the adoption of a low carbohydrate diet, moderate in fat, which stresses the importance of a regular intake of sufficient protein. You will not hear this advice from the American Diabetes Association, (or from most doctors) since they are still operating on the research as it was twenty years ago.
Many cancers, such as breast, colon and lung cancer, apparently have a hereditary tendency. However, it may be that nutritional habits are passed on from one generation to the next, thus accounting for the familial tendency toward cancer.
Excess fats damage the immune system through irradiation by free radicals during peroxidation of fats. Excess carbohydrates upset the hormonal system mentioned above (known as the "eicosanoids") and results in an imbalance favoring the type of eicosanoid (known as "prostaglandins E-2" or "PGE-2") which also suppresses the immune system. Thus obesity is associated with a higher incidence of infection.
Simple sugars are easily identified by their taste: sweet. Most people know to avoid excess simple sugars. The same alarms do not go off when consuming breads and pastas, although they should since these items convert to simple sugar within minutes of consumption.

Delegates pay tribute to Akunyili, Ado Bayero
Bayero died at age 83 last Friday while Akunyili lost the battle against cancer in an Indian hospital on Saturday at age 59.
The two were eulogised by delegates at the Abuja venue of the National Conference on Thursday.
A legal practitioner and a member of the Committee on Law, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Reforms in the National Conference, Mr. Mike Ozekhome (SAN), while paying tribute to Akunyili, said she won over 400 laurels in the course of serving humanity both in Nigeria and abroad.
Ozekhome added that the former Director-General of the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control hated injustice and oppression of the less privileged.
He said, “In spite of her illness, pains, agony, pangs and near blood, she literally defied nature and looked death in the face. She possessed passion and patriotism, she wore the face of the African woman and would better be remembered for her famous words that ‘a cabal held the late President Umaru Yar’Adua to ransom and refused to let us know the true state of his health.’
“Even when the Conference Chairman told her she could sit to contribute to discuss the President’s inaugural speech at plenary, she opted to stand, using her last breadth, her last strength, her last soul, to fight for Nigeria.”
In his motion, a former Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Bashir Al-Basu (retd.), described the late Emir as a detribalised Nigerian and lover of peace who in his private and public life preached peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.
Also, the President of Market Women, Mrs. Felicia Sani, said Akunyili would remain an unforgettable woman to Nigerians because she lived her live to save many of them.
She suggested that Akunyili should be immortalised to serve as a model for young Nigerian women.
In his contribution, the Director-General, Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Abubakar Jijiwa, also emphasised the need to immortalise Akunyili, saying her passion for Nigeria as a corporate entity and uncompromising but motherly attribute, should not go unnoticed
Also, Prof. Nnenna Otti, from Ebonyi State and a lecturer in the Department of Soil Science at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, described Akunyili as “a great woman, a patriot, an epitome of complete woman, a trailblazer, a thorough bred, courageous and a loving mother.”
Also contributing, National Chairman of Labour Party, Dan Nwanyanwu, said the former NAFDAC DG was a “patriot with a heart to fight fake drugs even when those involved were from her own part of the country.
“She was higher and above a section of the country. Her role in the Yar’Adua saga should not be forgotten in our democracy. She was straight, honest and a hater of injustice who worked hard and died for Nigeria.”

Halle Berry Ordered to Pay $16,000 a Month in Child Support
Halle Berry has been ordered to pay Gabriel Aubry a hefty sum each month for child support.
A Los Angeles court on May 30 ordered the Oscar-winning actress to pay $16,000 per month to support their daughter Nahla, 6, until she turns 19 years old or graduates from high school, whichever comes first. The court also awarded Aubry $115,000 in retroactive support.
The couple share equal custody of their daughter, according to court documents.
The pair reached an initial custody agreement in 2012 after a long court battle and a physical altercation involving Berry's now husband Olivier Martinez.
Berry, 47, gave birth to Nahla in 2008 after dating the Canadian model Aubry for two years. The couple split in April 2010.

Foods that Cause Body Odor
Genetics
determine more than your eye or hair color. Your genes also drive your “odorsignature,” the smell you naturally emit from oil and sweat glands when you’re
at rest, physically active or exercising.
The
fermentation of your perspiration by naturally occurring bacteria on your skin
produces the distinctive scent we less generously call body odor, says Dr.
Debra Jaliman, a dermatologist, spokesperson for the American Academy of
Dermatology and author of Skin Rules: Trade Secrets From a Top Dermatologist.
We each have a distinct combination of bacteria — about 1,000 types live in
human sweat glands — and therefore, our own unique smell.
Age is
believed to alter body odor. Researchers have not pinned down the mechanism,
but one theory is as we get older, the activity of our bacteria changes,
affecting our natural odor.
DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH
It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases:
Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat diseases.
METHOD OF TREATMENT
1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water
2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minute
3.. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.
4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink anything for 2 hours
5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at the beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it to 4 glasses per day.
6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others can enjoy a healthy life.
The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to cure/control/reduce main diseases:
1. High Blood Pressure (30 days)
2. Gastric (10 days)
3. Diabetes (30 days)
4. Constipation (10 days)
5. Cancer (180 days)
6. TB (90 days)
7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwards – daily..
This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times.
It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life. Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.
This makes sense .. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.
It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine.
Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.
A serious note about heart attacks:
• Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting,
• Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.
• You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.
• Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.
• 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.
• Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

HOW TO ACHIEVE SEXY FLAT TUMMY
The popular belief that exercising the stomach muscles alone will result in an attractive, toned tummy is very very false. You could have well developed lovely toned abdominal muscles but these muscles would still hide under the layer of fat covering them. Without exercise and the right types of food, you simply won't lose the fat that overlies your tummy. Like I said in the metabolism section, you have to burn as many calories as you are taking in, else you will not change the appearance of the fat tissue surrounding your abdominal muscles,
Now if you are thinking of spot reduction, forget it, those are myths. We cannot reduce fat from only one part of the body. When you lose body fat, you lose it from everywhere, and there is no way to target one particular area. Funny enough, the first place where we gain weight is the last place where we lose it. Once we lose fat from our body, we lose inches everywhere even where we do not want to lose such as in the bosoms.--
The most important aspects to a flat tummy include
1. Diet first
2. Exercises
Unlike popular beliefs, exercises work as well, but diet modification is the most important step to losing belly fat. Just because strong abdominal muscles do not directly translate into a toned, abdomen does not mean that you should avoid exercising them.
Your diet should include the following:
1. dark green vegetables,
2. fresh fruits,
3. fish,
4. lean red meat,
5. Egg white.
6. Beans
7. Moi-Moi (Nigerian)
8. Lots and lots of water. If you can, drink a glass of water each hour.
Foods to avoid:
1. Rice
2. Pastries
3. Sugar
4. Saturated fats
5. Pizza
6. Bread
7. Chocolates
8. Pounded yam(Nigerian)
9. Eba (Nigerian)
10. Semovita (Nigerian)
Start exercising
Note please: these exercises help you to make your abs stronger, but does not reduce the layer of fat. So if u like do them 24 hours a day, they’ll only make you have strong abs, but the layer of fat still hides the abs
Aerobic and weight training will raise your metabolic rate thus making your body l burn more calories. Note that overuse of crunches will only shorten your abs, pull your head forward and gives you a bad posture. Here are some exercises:
A. Sucking the gut in: This is the easiest exercise. It works very well and is very easy to do; you could do it anywhere anyplace and anytime.
1. Exhale. Suck your gut in.
2. Maintain the contraction for 10 to 20 seconds.
3. Repeat 10 to 15 times, as often as you like throughout the day (for example while in the shower, sitting at your desk, while driving or in the bus).

KEFEE IN COMMA
Teddy Esosa Don Momoh, Husband of Kefee Obareki, the gospel artiste presently under an intensive care at a US hospital, has urged Nigerians to keep praying for his wife.
Teddy, in a statement released by the singer’s publicist on Wednesday afternoon, said, “Kefee wants her friends, fans and well-wishers to know that she loves them. We just need prayers now; she just needs our prayers now because there is nothing God cannot do; prayer is the key. God is still the same yesterday, today and forever, He has done it before and he will do it again.”
The ace broadcaster made the plea from the US.
He stated that he could not really give a full account of the situation and cause of the collapse as he just got to the US on Saturday to be with his wife and she has been in intensive care since then.
Kefee and Teddy recently obtained diplomas in filmmaking from the US and had started off on some projects together. One was the shoot of her music video which was directed by Teddy.
Teddy further begs that the privacy of the family be respected as much as possible while we all take this situation to God in prayers.
Kefee was reported to have collapsed on a Chicago-bound flight some days back which forced the plane to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles so she could receive medical attention.
What's Considered Good Quality Honey
What
is considered as good quality honey? Even after deciding that a certain floral
variety of honey would be your most favourite type of honey, many of us are
often still left with the question of "How do I choose a particular floral
variety of honey amongst all the countless brands and prices of honey from all
over the world?" While there is no clear standard on what constitutes good
honey, the quality of honey is sometimes judged by the following factors:
1.
Water content
Some people believe that good quality honey essentially has a low water content as honey is likely to ferment and lose its freshness if its water content, which can be measured using a gadget called refractometer, is greater than 19%. All unpasteurized, raw honey contains wild yeasts. Due to the high sugar concentration, these yeasts will pose little risk in low moisture honey because osmosis will draw sufficient water from the yeast to force them into dormancy. However, in honey that has a higher proportion of water, there is a higher chance that the yeast may cause fermentation in storage, whereby the increase of acidity can become a quality issue for the honey
Honey
is hygroscopic, which means that it easily absorbs moisture from the air. Thus,
in areas with a very high humidity it can be difficult to produce honey of
relatively low water content. Raw honey's moisture content can be as low as
14%, and is deemed by some as more valuable. Honey containing up to 20% water
is not recommended for mead-making. One simple way of judging the relative
quantity of water (not purity) in honey involves taking two same-size,
same-temperature, well-sealed jars of honey from different sources. Turn the
two jars upside-down and watch the bubbles rise. Bubbles in the honey with more
water content will rise faster.
2.
HMF(Hydroxymethylfurfural)
HMF is a break-down product of fructose (one of the main sugars in honey) formed slowly during storage and very quickly when honey is heated. The amount of HMF present in honey is therefore used as a guide to storage length and the amount of heating which has taken place. HMF's occurrence and accumulation in honey is variable depending on honey type. High levels of HMF may indicate excessive heating during the extraction process. Honey that is traded in a bulk form is usually required to be below 10 or 15mg/kg to enable further processing and then give some shelf life before a level of 40 mg/kg is reached. It is not uncommon for honey sold in hot climates to be well over 100 mg/kg in HMF. This is mostly due to the ambient temperatures (over 35°C) that honey is exposed to in the distribution channel. Some countries set an HMF limit for imported honey. You may also want to note the colour of the honey as it sometimes may be an indicator of the length of storage or amount of exposure to heat.
5.
Colour
Honey is color graded into light, amber, and dark categories which do not really have any bearing on quality. Some of the most distinctively and strongly flavored honey varieties, such as basswood, are very light, while very mild and pleasant honeys such as tulip poplar can be quite dark. Honey color is measured on the Pfund Scale in millimeters. While it is not an indicator of honey quality and there are exceptions to the rule, generally speaking, the darker color the honey, the higher its mineral contents, the pH readings, and the aroma/flavor levels. Minerals such as potassium, chlorine, sulfur, iron, manganese, magnesium, and sodium have been found to be much higher in darker honeys.

3.
Inverted sugars
High
levels of HMF (greater than 100 mg/kg) can also be an indicator of adulteration
with inverted sugars. Cane sugar or sucrose, is "inverted" by heating
with a food acid, and this process creates HMF. Many food items sweetened with
high fructose corn syrups, e.g. carbonated soft drinks, can have levels of HMF
up to 1,000 mg/kg
4.
Impurities
For
most consumers, good quality honey is expected to be visually free of defect --
clean and clear. Honey which has a very high pollen content appears cloudy, and
the presence of many other contaminations such as particles of wax, bees,
splinters of wood, and dust certainly does make it look unappetising and
unappealing for anyone to buy and consume, and hence it appears as if it's of
very low value. Unfortunately, no matter how much food value or health benefits
some of these particles like pollen can offer, this kind of honey is hard to be
associated with good quality honey and is immediately rejected by most
consumers at the super-mart. And this explains why it's almost impossible to
find unfiltered, raw honey on the shelf. Its cloudy appearance makes them
commercially unattractive. Honey is color graded into light, amber, and dark categories which do not really have any bearing on quality. Boko Haram Called 100 in Borno
Over 100 people were killed on Tuesday night after Boko Haram men attacked 4 villages; Attagara, Agapalawa, Ngoshe and Aganjara in the Gwoza local government area of Borno State.
News of the attack is just being heard because the men destroyed the telecommunications mast in the villages during the attacks.
Reports say the men dressed as military personnel deceived the villagers that they came to protect them, only to gather them together and began to shoot them. Some of the villagers who tried to run into the bush for safety were pursued and killed by the sect men who came in terrain vehicles and motorbikes and armed with Kalashnikov assault weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. Continue...
According to Hon. Peter Bive, the House of Reps member for the area at the National Assembly who spoke with AFP, he said the attacks on the villages were left many dead.
“There were deadly attacks on these villages by Boko Haram insurgents who killed a large number of people and destroyed homes. We are still trying to compile a toll of the dead as people on the ground are still counting the number of casualties.” he said. He also stated that the sect men have been daring enough in their actions as they have foisted their flags in 7 villages in the region indicating that those areas are now in their control
"Boko Haram have hoisted their flags in at least seven villages in the area which they now claim to be under their control,” he said.
