US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended a high-profile meeting in Alaska on Friday without securing a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The three-hour closed-door talks produced no concrete breakthrough, though both leaders described the engagement as “productive.”

“We’re not there yet, but we’ve made progress. There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” Trump told reporters, refusing to give details but insisting that only “a few significant issues” remained unresolved.

Putin, on his part, said the discussions had created “understanding” that could pave the way for peace. He added in English, with a smile: “Next time in Moscow.”

The Russian leader also praised Trump, saying the war in Ukraine would not have started if he had been US president instead of Joe Biden.

The summit ended with both leaders pledging further consultations, including with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and NATO allies, who have expressed unease about Trump’s overtures to Moscow.

Despite the show of camaraderie, the summit produced no ceasefire deal, leaving the Ukraine war, now in its third year, without a clear path to peace.
