Nigerian PHD holder in Biomedical Engineering shares inspirational message

Dr Olubamiji is the first black person to earn a PHD in Biomedical
Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan 

NAIJ.com came across the inspirational message written by the young lady who recently became the first black person to earn a PHD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.


Miss Adeola Olubamiji, recently added the title 'Dr' to her name after successful earning a PHD in Biomedical Engineering. 

The young lady whose inspirational story of moving from a pepper hawker to a PHD holder made her a viral sensation, took to her Facebook page to thank Nigerians and also share a message of motivation.
Dr Olubamiji proceeded to explain why there is a need to introduce practical science and technology to Nigerian schools, instead of just the theoretical ones being taught.
Sharing her post, she wrote:
"Dear all, Thank you for your outpour of love and for telling my story in every Nigerian home, blogs, newspapers and pages. You have created a revolution in terms of the role models given to a girl child. I have seen all your inboxes, I have seen all your comments but I can’t reply to everything yet. Some of you want suggestions with scholarships, some of you want mentorship, some of you want a shoulder to lean on, some of you relate to my story and some of you got motivated to continue to go above and beyond to train your kids as there is a future for them.
Apart from the pepper seller bagged PhD inspiration, how many of you paused to ask or think "what is Biomedical Engineering about"? What is the future of Manufacturing Engineering in Nigeria? What is 3D printing (that she did her thesis on)? As a young scientist and a potential mother, I want to tell you that it's about time we introduce practical “science and technology” back to Nigerian schools to supplement the theoretical one that is currently dominant. Let's introduce science outreach programs that will make these kids love to go back to those high schools and those Universities and bag As in those courses because they want to become scientists/ engineers/ doctors/ pilots/ agriculturists and so on. Let's reintroduce Innovative Science and Technology that will pave way for solid "made in" Nigeria airplanes, medical equipments, cars, clothes, plastics or at least pencils!
I want to tell you that I am not alone, here is another inspiring dose right beside me in the picture, Dr. Bunmi Olakanmi. She obtained her PhD in COMPUTER SCIENCE a day after mine. Bunmi has never paid tuition all her life. Scholarships from High school until PhD. She did that PhD as a mother and a wife and came from a very humble background like myself.
I won’t start a blog nor a YouTube channel nor do anything without your support. Nigeria needs more than talk shows and motivational speeches. Together let's build the Bunmis and the Adeolas of the next generation from your kids, cousins, nieces and nephews. Let us change the narrative of "Science and Technology" in Nigeria.
Let's together change the narrative of who our kids look up to, build young girls that their husbands will worship and husbands who are comfortable in their skins. Let this movement not be just an inspiration that will die, let it be a Science and Technology revolution. Share this to and with everybody who needs to see it.
