Robot hand and arm gets official approval

A robot arm capable of picking up delicate objects has been approved for use by US medical authorities.

The Deka Arm has fingers that can move much like real ones making it easier for amputees to feed themselves, zip up clothes and unlock doors.

The arm has a much greater range of movement than existing devices many of which are based around metal hooks or designs more than 100 years old.

US Army veterans helped to test and refine the prosthetic limb.

The Arm was developed with $40m (£24m) of research cash provided by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa). That money was part of a larger $100m Revolutionising Prosthetics research project run by Darpa that aimed to radically improve the range of robot limbs available to those who have lost upper limbs.

While prosthetics have improved in recent years, much of the development work has been done on legs rather than replacements for lost arms and hands. This is because of the formidable engineering challenges of reproducing the co-ordinated movement of human hands and fingers.

Currently, officially approved designs for replacement arms are often based around split metal hooks - a design first drawn up in 1912.

By contrast, the Deka Arm has been designed to resemble real limbs as much as possible.

"It was designed to produce near-natural upper extremity control to injured people who have suffered amputations," Darpa spokesman Justin Sanchez told Reuters.

The device uses electrodes which detect tiny muscle twitches wearers make as they learn to control the 10 different movements the prosthetic arm can carry out.

"This prosthetic limb system can pick up objects as delicate as a grape, as well being able to handle very rugged tools like a hand drill," said Mr Sanchez.

The US Federal Drug Administration, which oversees the prosthetic approval process, said the Deka Arm is designed for those who lost their arm at the shoulder, mid-upper arm or mid-lower arm.

The Deka Research firm behind the Arm was founded by renowned engineer Dean Kamen who invented the Segway scooter and many other devices.

Ryan Giggs to discuss Man Utd role with Louis van Gaal

Ryan Giggs will meet with Louis van Gaal in the Netherlands on Wednesday as Manchester United move towards finalising their new management team.
Dutch national coach Van Gaal, 62, is set to be appointed as United boss and will speak to Giggs about a potential coaching position.
Welshman Giggs, 40, ended the campaign as United's interim manager following the dismissal of David Moyes in April.

Van Gaal is currently overseeing the Netherlands' World Cup preparations at their training camp in Hoenderloo with Wednesday a designated rest day for the squad.
Giggs and United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will go to the Netherlands for the talks, with the club keen to end their search for a replacement for Moyes.
A number of the staff who worked under both Moyes and Giggs during his four-match spell in charge, including Phil Neville, Chris Woods, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, are likely to leave the club.
United, who are due to release their third-quarter financial results on Thursday, finished seventh in the Premier League and will not be playing in European competition next season.

World Economic Forum On Africa Attracts $68bn Investments, Says Organise

The just concluded World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa has attracted over 68 billion dollars (about N12.9 trillion) in investment to the African continent, Dr Philipp Rosler, the Managing Director of the Forum, said. Rosler disclosed this in a closing remarks on Friday in Abuja.

He said the funds were in the form of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) as well as private and public investments across African countries which would continue to yield results in the next years. Rosler said the funds were targeted at investments in beautiful projects that would foster the agriculture sector, improve infrastructure such as roads, railways. hospitals, education, skill development and ICT.

”What this means is that it is not just money, but opportunities for Africa and the reason why we are here is to unlock the opportunities for the improvement in the states of Africa,” he said. He said that the event was one of the best his organisation had hosted in the recent years.

Rosler said that the forum had achieved the missions of his organisation ‘’which is commitment to the growth of the world in three steps”. The steps, according to him, are “to create community of interest, to create community of purpose and lastly to have community of exchange. The WEF(A), Abuja, has been able to achieve these. For instance, in creating the community of interest, the articles about the last three days is more that 48,000 articles which is three times more than the last year.

“Millions of people have now realised that Africa is important in global economy.

“Secondly, we created the community of purpose, we have more than 1000 participants here in the last three days and they were here not withstanding all the reports about security. They were here because of all the discussions and they send their voices of solidarity with the people of Nigeria.

“They come up with a common voice that they will never allow the terrorists and violence dictate our agenda and the peoples agenda for the continent.”

Speaking in same vein, Elzie Kanza, the Director and Head of Africa WEF, said since May 2, there were about 50,000 social media items that mentioned WEF (A), Abuja.

She said the coverage had a total reach of over 2.1 billion, which is about 30 per cent of world population.

On twitter, she said the numbers of followers increase by over 1200 people per day and the digital reach increased to about 4.1 million people.

Kanza said that on facebook, the clips on launch of the “Save-School Initiative” press conference was watched 1200 times.

In terms of practical results, she said that the “Safe School Initiative”, an aftermath of the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, was outstanding.

The ‘Safe School Initiative Fund’ was created by the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, following the abduction and it is to develop and enhanced education in the terrorism-ravaged areas of Nigeria.

The fund had attracted 10 billion dollars each from the initiator and the Federal Government, respectively. Kanza said that the Chinese government had planned to invest 42 billion dollars in Africa, 10 billion dollars in investment financing, 30 billion dollars in extending credit lines and 2 billion dollars into China-Africa investment fund.

In the business sector, she said the Dangote group would be investing about 16 billion dollars in Nigeria over the next four years, adding that it would also create 180,000 jobs.

According Kanza, another company is investing one billion dollars across Africa in the next 10 years while 20,00 jobs will be created created through the Digital Africa initiative. In the power sector, she said that 2 billion dollars from donor agencies had been committed to improve electricity supply across Nigeria.

ON health, Kanza said that the immunisation drive got 700 million dollars through an MoU that was signed.

According to her, in the overall, there is strong commitment between the private and the public sector to collaborate regionally and globally in the fight against terror in Nigeria and the rest of Africa.

What is Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a slowly progressive disease of the brain that is characterized by impairment of memory and eventually by disturbances in reasoning, planning, language, and perception. Many scientists believe that Alzheimer's disease results from an increase in the production or accumulation of a specific protein (beta-amyloid protein) in the brain that leads to nerve cell death.

The likelihood of having Alzheimer's disease increases substantially after the age of 70 and may affect around 50% of persons over the age of 85. Nonetheless, Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging and is not something that inevitably happens in later life. For example, many people live to over 100 years of age and never develop Alzheimer's disease.

Who develops Alzheimer's disease?

The main risk factor for Alzheimer's disease is increased age. As a population ages, the frequency of Alzheimer's disease continues to increase. Ten percent of people over 65 years of age and 50% of those over 85 years of age have Alzheimer's disease. Unless new treatments are developed to decrease the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease, the number of individuals with Alzheimer's disease in the United States is expected to be 13.8 million by the year 2050.

There are also genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease. Most patients develop Alzheimer's disease after age 70. However, less than 5% of patients develop the disease in the fourth or fifth decade of life (40s or 50s). At least half of these early onset patients have inherited gene mutations associated with their Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, the children of a patient with early onset Alzheimer's disease who has one of these gene mutations has a 50% risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

There is also a genetic risk for late onset cases. A relatively common form of a gene located on chromosome 19 is associated with late onset Alzheimer's disease. In the majority of Alzheimer's disease cases, however, no specific genetic risks have yet been identified.

Other risk factors for Alzheimer's disease include high blood pressure (hypertension), coronary artery disease, diabetes, and possibly elevated blood cholesterol. Individuals who have completed less than eight years of education also have an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. These factors increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, but by no means do they mean that Alzheimer's disease is inevitable in persons with these factors.
